After an introduction to a variety of biographies, each student has started reading a different "Who Was...?" book about a famous person of their choice. This week the focus was on learning about the person's childhood and early life. The third graders were especially excited to mark interesting facts in their books using post-it notes and then share one or two bits information with their classmates. We're all looking forward to learning more during this fun unit!

Things are buzzing in the Library!
In the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, library routines have been introduced, book care has been discussed and everyone has enthusiastically chosen books to take home.
The first graders have begun the unit "Stories Around the World". They will receive passports and "travel" to several different continents as we read different folktales and visit websites throughout the year.
The focus in second grade is Tall Tales. We are comparing and contrasting a selection of tales and the students will participate in a reader's theatre activity in the upcoming weeks.
Third graders have explored the Dewey Decimal System through games and activities. They are learning to navigate the library with greater independence! They are especially enjoying the read aloud for this trimester, "Dominic" by William Steig
Fourth graders have spent time discussing different genres of books and their reading preferences. They are learning how to use the catalog to conduct searches for fiction and non-fiction books in our collection. This week they will begin a unit on Internet research in prepartion for their animal research project.
The Fifth graders have also participated in activities on searching for material using the catalog as well as lessons in which they practiced viewing and judging websites with a critical eye. In the next week, we will prepare to begin a research project on European explorers of the 1400s and 1500s in conjunction with the social studies unit in the fifth grade classrooms.
