There are so many ways to become involved at King. Your participation in PA - sponsored activities has such an impact on the lives of our children and our wonderful Faculty. We hope that everyone will take the opportunity to volunteer his/her time this year to contribute in whatever way possible to our School.
Parents Support Community Service (PSCS) wants to help you with spring cleaning! Many of us - particularly those whose last child is graduating - have a collection of arts and crafts supplies which we no longer need. Instead of discarding them, please consider donating them to King and PSCS will distribute to one of our partner organizations such as DOMUS, Neighbor’s Link, and the Yerwood Center. All three community groups have children’s programs and would welcome additional craft items.
if you are interested in donating your unwanted but useable arts and crafts supplies, please bring them to School, May 15-22, and place them in the bins located in each of the three divisions. Items can include, but are not limited to, construction paper, felt, foam letters and shapes, glitter, glue, markers, paper, ribbons, sequins, whole crayons - all the things we used for school projects and rainy day activities. Please, no liquid (Tempera) paints.

The PA has had a very successful year, thanks to the contributions of our many dedicated parent volunteers. We are now in the process of filling positions for the 2013-14 academic year. If you are interested in putting your name or someone else's name forward for a leadership position, or if you have any questions, please email pa@klht.org.

Last Wednesday, April 24, the Parent Diversity Committee sponsored the Second Annual Multicultural Fair. t was an event not to be missed! The day started with an amazing performance from a Brazilian martial arts/dance troupe called Capoeira. Then, from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., students and Faculty were treated to a veritable World Fair in the LS gym. They were able to taste delicacies and learn fun facts from countries around the world. LS students were given passports and sent on a fact-finding scavenger hunt. Countries represented included: St. Vincent's, Britain, France, the Phillipines, Jamaica, Italy, Pakistan, India, Brazil, China, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Lebanon, Morocco, Russia, Nigeria, Slovakia and the USA.
A group of parents gathered in the PAC this morning for the first "Community Reads and Book Discussion." Anne F.C. Richards, an Episcopal priest at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan, lead a lively and informal discussion centered around The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids (HarperCollins 2006). She focused on such topics as the toxic effects of too much pressure on kids; why affluence can work against kids’ mental health; how to help our children construct sturdy internal homes and lasting feelings of well-being; and how to connect helpfully with our kids at various ages and stages as well as how to counteract the effects of permissiveness by being an authoritative (not authoritarian) parent.
This was the first of what promises to be many informative book discussions. If you missed it, join us next time.
