Skills covered this week:
- Review oo (in book), and oo (in boot)
- Work on au and aw
- Work on homonyms, review synonyms, and antonyms
- Work on identifying phonics and spelling rules through morning message, poetry, games, chants, and reading and writing activities
- Writing- handwriting and sentences and stories using basic capitalization/punctuation rules
- Work on spelling and dictation exercises
- Work on expanded sentences
- Work on ABC order
- Reading groups-Work on fluency, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, critical thinking sequencing, and oral and written comprehension skills
- Daily journal writing and writer’s workshop activities
- Work on poetry writing
- Homework this week: Please see the directions in your child’s folder
Math:
- Review all addition/subtraction strategies
- Review make a ten strategy
- Work on recognizing the value of different coins and bills
- Play cooperative math games to reinforce addition, subtraction, and money skills
- Solve word problems using cue words (in all, altogether, are left)
Science/Social Studies:
- Continue working on our water/weather unit
Sight Words: The students have learned chants for the following sight words, what, of, said, you, they, saw, happy, because, like, when, want friend, come/some & here, look & would/could & should, little & was, play, people, have does, pretty, goes, done, are, don’t, where, there, says, were, gone, away, very, good, been, who, write, funny, and why Please continue to encourage your child to demonstrate these chants/gestures for you.
Reminders:
May 22 First Grade field trip to the Orange Fairgrounds to participate in the “Festival of Cultures” We will be taking a coach bus. Students need to be in regular uniform. (Kaki shorts can be worn as well as skorts) Lunch will be provided for those children on the meal plan. If children are bringing their own lunch, we ask that you send it in a labeled disposable bag. No candy or soda please! Permission slips will not be required. We are all set with chaperones. Thank you to those parents that have volunteered to chaperone. We will be leaving King at 8:30. If you’d like to follow us please be at King by 8:15.

We want to thank all the grandparents and special friends for sharing a wonderful day with us. Everyone had such a terrific time!
