First Grade Service Learning Project

The first grade has read many books and done a variety of projects involving our school wide theme of "poverty." The first grade has studied Africa and read a variety books. One book we really loved was Beatrice's Goat. It is a story of a girl in Uganda who receives a goat as a gift through the Heifer International Program. The goat enables Beatrice and her family to have better food, income, and a chance for her to go to school. That's why we decided that we wanted to do something to help another African family in need. Therefore, the first graders are going to raise their own money by doing different chores and jobs at home. Then with the money they earn, they will bring it into school and graph it, count it, sort it, and put it all together. Then we will use the money to buy animals through the Heifer International Program. Heifer international's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Gifts of livestock and training help families improve their lives by providing them with food, better nutrition, and an opportunity to earn their own money, and share with other families in need by "passing on the gift." This means the families agree to give the animal's offspring so another family can have the same opportunity that they did. The children will learn the importance of working and earning their own money to help others in need. They will also develop a sense of responsibility and pride and appreciate the gift of giving. We hope that everyone can participate and help your child earn money by letting them do household chores and duties. The children have written a letter to explain the first grade Heifer project. We are really looking forward to raising as much money as we can by May 31. Thank you so much for your continued support and cooperation. We are so happy to be a part of a community that cares about helping others in need.

Sincerely,

Dear LS Parents:

During the end of November and through mid-December, your son/daughter will be participating in the Kids in Crisis SafeTalk program. This program incorporates the Child Assault Prevention Program, an international copywrited program that began in 1978. As parents concerned about the safety of your son/daughter, we hope you will join us in participating in this program.

The SafeTalk program is designed to help prevent child assault by teaching children to recognize and deal with potentially dangerous situations, and by training teachers and parents to help prevent the victimization of children. The program's two components are a parent workshop and a classroom workshop for children in Grades K-5.

Our parent program will be held on Monday, November 19, 8:00-9:00 a.m. in the LS library. This program includes information on Kids in Crisis, an overview of the children's classroom workshop, the role of the parent and family in prevention, and strategies for increasing communication about potentially dangerous situations.

The classroom workshop combines guided group discussion with a series of role-plays focusing on situations children frequently encounter: a child-to-child assault; stranger-to-child assault; and an assault involving an adult the child knows. Discussion helps children to identify what options they have to protect themselves. The strategies we focus on are self-assertion, peer support, and telling a trusted adult.

The success of the SafeTalk program depends on the support of the school community. Because we encourage children to share their experiences and concerns with adults in their lives, it is important for parents and school staff to be willing and able to respond to these concerns. We invite you, as members of the King Community, to attend the SafeTalk parent program.

Contact Judy Kelser to RSVP at (203) 322-3496, ext. 310, or email jkelser@klht.org. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at (203) 322 3596, ext. 356. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,
Robin Ordan, LCSW

LS Counselor

September 18-21

We are off to a wonderful start in first grade and we are enjoying working with all the children. After two busy weeks, they are meeting new friends and reacquainting with old. The children have started to settle into longer days and are adjusting nicely to the routine of first grade. We will start forming small groups for reading next week. Students will work on specific reading, phonics, and writing strategies and skills during reading group and language arts. So far, they have been introduced to sight words through special chants and hand gestures. The students have learned chants for the following words, what and of and next week will learn said and you. Please encourage your child to demonstrate these chants/gestures for you. During math instruction, we are working on developing new vocabulary, understanding whole, part, bonds and turn-around-facts, as well as addition strategies and problem solving skills. Our first social studies unit is on friendship. We are focusing on sharing, mutual respect, and recognizing differences.

As you know our lunchtime is from 11:30-11:55. We make sure to walk the children through the lunch line and encourage them to make healthy choices when selecting their food. We try to guide them towards more colorful food, which include vegetables and fruit. For the most part the children have been doing a nice job of selecting healthy meals. We will continue to supervise them and offer assistance whenever possible. We have had the opportunity to meet most of you already and we are looking forward to meeting all of you soon. We believe that communication between school and home is essential to a successful year. If you need to get in touch with us at any time please email us at phein@klht.org or sbenedetto@klht.org.

Welcome to first grade! We are looking forward to a productive and exciting year with your children.

There is quite a transition from kindergarten to first grade. Your child will be participating in a more structured and academic environment. After a busy day, your child may require a bit more free time at home, in addition to extra hugs.

Our day begins at 8:00 a.m. Please be prompt. If a student arrives before 7:45 they will need to wait in the LS lobby. Dismissal is at 2:50 p.m. in the LS entrance. If your child is going to be picked up early by someone other than a parent, caregiver, or carpool driver, his or her teacher must receive a written note or email prior to dismissal.

Uniforms are needed everyday. On B-days, formal uniforms are required for assembly. Please check your handbook for proper attire. If your child hasn't brought in a change of clothes yet, please have him/her bring it in as soon as possible. Since children often misplace or cannot identify their belongings, please label all items sent to school.

First graders have physical education on A, B, E, F, G, H, K, & L days. For this class, your child needs to keep an extra pair of sneakers at school. Sneakers can also be worn everyday except formal uniform days.

If your child is not on the lunch program, please send in a snack, lunch, and beverage. The beverage should be in a non-breakable container.

If you wish to celebrate your child's birthday in school, feel free to send in enough treats for your child's entire class. Please be advised that we have several students with nut allergies, therefore any food item brought into school must be completely nut free. In order to avoid hurt feelings, please send party invitations through the mail.

Please refer to this webpage frequently throughout the year for our monthly newsletter and important announcements and special dates. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at any time.
